Yugma

I tried to do a Yugma with Jolene today however,  I was unsucessful as my offiice computer would not let me download it even with the administrator code. When I talk to the tech support for the division he was pleased that I was not able to access this program and said that  Yugma is not commonly used in a business type setting.  Can anyone explain to me why this would be so.  What is so bad about Yugma?  I will have to try again to use Yugma but I will have to use Jolene’s computer.   Signing off Angele

  1. Not sure what type of business setting he was referring to. The business of education? There are business applications that do similar things but a very great expense. WEBEX and Microsoft Sharepoint etc. Bridgit are a few examples and they don’t necessarily work any better than Yugma plus they take a great deal of administrative set up and support.
I think some times the puter folks get nervous when people figure out away around them.

  2. I’ve read your blog and hope that you have success with Jolene’s computer.

  3. I agree with Glen. It seems your tech dudes are a wee bit on the paranoid side. They are probably worried because someone else gains control of your computer, which when helping someone else is a good thing. However, as we’ve all experienced, someone’s good things is someone else’s bad thing to be feared like cell phones and Facebook in schools.

  4. Good Morning Angel: I think in an educational setting, like the one we are in at present, Yugma is very appropriate… For business settings, admin mtgs and such, Skype woyuld be the way to go. In talking with my son, his company (Brice Inc.) uses Skype to conduct busines from Alaska with the Lower 48.

PS: Then again, using Yugma is kinda like an interactive Power Point presentation with the interaction being what you want.

But you know how some techies are, keeping people in the dark ages (ignorant) is a form of control and power and job security… can’t tell this one too much, he/she may apply for my job.

  5. We use this type of software so that our network technician doesn’t always have to drive to the computer to fix a simple problem. Some organizations send you a site and you connect to them which opens the door for them to take control of your desktop. That’s a very common use of a Yugma type connection and most large software companies provide service this way since they’re servicing software around the world.

  6. Hmm, I guess the bigger the company, the more they lock down. But in the era od web 2.0, there are a lot of great new apps that people will want to use… that save a ton of money. Think Skype and Yugma. There are other great downloads. Firefox. So I think the IT guys are going to need to think more progressively about this. On the topic of Yugma, we use Yugma and think its great. Easy to use. We’re getting more done (we’re collaborating more). And, we’re saving us a lot of money.
